Welcome to the Rock Shoppe! What started as a hobby and love of geology has now grown into a thriving booth and experience at the Maryland Renaissance Festival. Co-founded by Denise and Grant Speight, the Rock Shoppe started by driving through the country visiting the available public mineral mines. Their trips inspired the idea of a sluice mine, where renaissance festival guests could come and experience the act of mining while getting a geology lesson.
Since 1997 Grant and Denise have made frequent trips to Story, AK to mine quartz crystal and bring them back to share with the patrons of the Maryland Renaissance festival. What started as a small sluice mine, where guests receive a bag of dirt filled with crystals and minerals, soon grew into a sluice mine and rock shoppe. Their son, Joshua Lamont, now manages the shoppe. We invite festival patrons to come and sluice away for buried treasure or visit the shop, where larger clusters and pieces are for sale.
